The Original Series today may be dated and boring but to many it was interesting and intelligent. Today it can be passed off as "another cop show" or "old-geezer show". In the eyes of the 70's folks they don't think so. Back then, Hawaii Five-O was an early Criminal Minds, CSI and Law and Order smashed together. Peter Lenkov may have thought, "Hey, maybe if I can add explosions, gunfights, car chase, and people beating the shit out of each other added with a really loud music and make it fast-paced then it won't be so boring". Original series fans are split in 2 groups once the Reboot Series started. Half of them loved the series, but the other half hated it. let's look in the second half. This half did not like explosions, gunfights, car chase, actions and stunts put in the Reboot. They view them unrealistic. The violence of the Original was tone down to 70's standard, compared to the Reboot which is super-violence. The Reboot manage to bring into the series that the Original Series does not have. So what is the history of Hawaii Five-O?
Back in 1967, Leonard was going to call this "The Man" and wanted to set his show in California but was asked to set it in Hawaii, and his mother-in-law lived in Hawaii so he set it there and called it "Hawaii Five-O" which he written 11 episodes.
In the Original Series they would focus on all kinds of crimes. such as scamming, money laundering, espionage, bank robbery, bio-terrorist, murder, kidnappings, assassination, foreign agents and many more. In the Reboot they would focus on crimes such as kidnapping, murder and bank robberies. The Original series was cleverly written and often unpredictable which would last from Season 1-9, from 10-12 it became less interesting, stupid and predictable. In the Reboot however the writing looks like it was done in a rush, There was no time to correct the storylines, however rarely the episodes of the Reboot would be good. The Original series are stand-alones, while in the Reboot they tried to have a one main storyline that would carry on to the next episode. The only problem is it's not well thought out of. I wish I can say that the Reboot does a good job, yet the main storyline is a mess. The Original series often involved courts which the Reboot avoid. The Reboot also avoid Hawaii nationalism issues which the Reboot avoid too. We would have a shot of Washington DC where a man name Johnathen Kayes would be in touch with McGarrett, in the Reboot he was turned into a woman name Jenna Kayes and in season 5 of the Reboot, different agents from Washington DC would contact McGarrett. During the 70's, Communism was a issue, in the Reboot it was understandably gone. In the Original they sometimes travel to foreign cities which the Reboot rarely does. Most episodes of the Original Series is contemporary, characters and even villains would have personalities or ideals, which is largely absent in the Reboot.
In the Original series, the character interaction was very subtle. during the 70's, exploring a character backstories was rare. Leonard did not want character backgrounds or flashbacks, the Reboot ignores that rule and add character backgrounds and would often showcase families. The only problem is they done it in a soap-opera fashion in the eyes of purist.
In the Original, characters would often brainstorm, outwit bad guys and rarely would there be actions and stunts. The Reboot would take actions and stunts to the extreme. in the Reboot they often ignore the law and has the Hawaii Five-O beats up suspect, often killing them. Realism is ignored in the Reboot but it does not matter to many people. Original series fans however wants the Reboot to carry the charm and realism of Hawaii Five-O to be carried in the Reboot. I say it should not be a clone of the Original series. Original series fans points out that characters act like adults while the Reboot act childish. I have to agree on that one, as the entire cargument has little to nothing to do with the case. Original series fans reject these carguments as character development, carguments was a good idea for the first season of the Reboot, but became old fast. Many Original series fans do not want to understand that the Reboot is catching up with times, which in their eyes is what today's society is diminishing I have to agree. Today's society is twisted. However my only problem with the Reboot is that the story is not panned out right and has many holes in it as the writers do not care about nor are they're trying to make it a quality show. I don't want the Reboot to be a clone, just done right.
The Original showcase iconic actors such as the tough Jack Lord with a cool looks and the diligent James MacArthur who are both Americans with local actors such as Kam Fong, Zulu, Herman Wedemeyer, Al Harrison, Moe, and Doug Mosseman. In the Reboot the actors are hardly iconic and the personalities of the characters were not so great. In the Reboot we got a Action figure wimp who can act, A complainer who bickers over everything and nothing changes, and a tired woman who often moans. Just one person manage to grace his role. They came from everywhere and hardly did they bring in local actors.
The Original series oftens to explore Hawaii's environment and it's culture. The Reboot rarely does that, the Reboot sometimes forget that it's in Hawaii.
So is the Original series perfect? Of course not. The production codes of the Original series is wonky, some stories are horrible.
