Today, when people looked at the violence and characters Original series, they would say "It's too tame compared to today's standard and characters are boring" they clearly don't know what they are talking about and they would find excuse why not like the original series. They would say characters are boring because they are law-abiding, diligent, and respecting authority. They don't even like it because it was out-of-date. They would say that supporting characters don't get enough screentime while the main characters get's the most attention. Let's look in the subject called violence, which does not make a show good. Today's audience has became shallow and ignorant compared to people back in the 70's. In the 70's, people complained that Hawaii Five-O was violence so they tried to tone it down by the 9th season. Like I said, violence does not make the Reboot any better nor the presence of violence will indicate that it will be a good show. In cop shows you have to have violence because it's a part of fighting crime. In real life they're gunfights, fist fights and car chase in real life but it's not as excessive that you find on TV. When incorporating these actions there has to be a suspension of disbelief . When the Reboot and other shows overuse violence it becomes noticeably unrealistic, as opposed to be cut above realism. Modern audience do not seems to understand that and think it's realistic when shows like the Reboot overuse violence. but that is like someone trying way too hard to act and you have to laugh at them. Take Criminal Minds for example, it's a good show and it's violence but the show does not seems to overdoing it. In one episode they had to set up a warning for viewers about the mature content of the episode before airing it. The Reboot does not do that. It grabs you by the coller and screams "Look at me! I have violence! You don't see this in the Original series!"
In 1976, Jack Lord said violence are needed in a cop show but even violence need a context. It cannot be violence for violence's sake. So the problems of modern writings is that they use violence to saturate storylines, use to excite shallow people with short attention-span that it becomes out of place in a storyline to the point that writers do not have to make a well-constructed storyline. Modern audience has become desensitized to violence because they have been bombard with it by TV shows and films. It was made to give an audience an jolt, it really accomplish nothing. Older people who lived through the time when the original series ran on CBS, they would say they like the original series but prefer the Reboot or they enjoy the Original series but today hates it because it was out of date and lacks violence.
To whine that a show is set in the 70's that does not reflect the 2010 just shows that people are being ignorant. What I like about the Original series is that characters use their brains to solve crime. Yes the Reboot did have McGarrett use his brain but that is only for some episodes. True that the Original is out-of-date, time changes, hairstyle changed, fashion changed, technology changes, political and social issues change but the Original reminds interesting and people forgot that the Original series inspire the Reboot. Without it would not exist.
In the Reboot, they tried to give characters personalities, something they think does not exist in the Original. They claimed that in the Original, side characters such as Chin, Kono, Duke, Frank, Danno, Lori, Ben, Truck and Kimo would all go "yes boss" while they are loyal, diligent, tough, having sense of humor, and dedicated while the boss is tough, people today thought of them boring so they tried to fix that in the Reboot. They did so by making the Reboot Danno be a loudmouth, Reboot McGarrett into an action figure who beats people up, and Reboot Kono the a kick ass woman and Reboot Chin appears to be fine. Yet the Original series fans do not approve this while Reboot fans approve it.
The reason why the central character get so much screentime is not because of Jack Lord, it was because in the 60's, 70's and 80's, storylines for side characters does not exist until the 90's. If Hawaii Five-O was released in the 90's then side characters would have their own episodes and equal screentime. They only way they get screentime if they are in the middle of the investigations. In conclusion, characters of the Original series are not boring and excessive violence are not necessary.
